Manta rays have evolved leaf-shaped filter lobes that efficiently separate food particles from seawater. In a filtration system inspired by manta rays, vortices form at the pore entrances as the channel flow rate increases (top to bottom images) to a level comparable to that in the ray's cavity. These vortices facilitate the separation of particles based on their size (< 100 μm).
