Oscillating grids were classically applied to generate almost isotropic and homogenious turbulence with a weak mean flow and have been studied almost entirely by experimental methods like Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). On the other hand, fractal grids were used to generate downstream turbulence in wind and water tunnels and have been studied both experimentally and through numerical simulations. We propose here Direct Numerical Simulations of the flows generated by fractal oscillating grids in initally quiescent water.
