Spiral defect chaos (SDC) is an intrinsic state of Rayleigh-Bénard convection found within a large domain (on the right). SDC is characterised by the presence of spiral and defect-like convection patterns, exhibiting chaotic behaviour. Confined to a smaller domain, five invariant states (on the left) resembling the localised patterns of SDC, were identified. We propose that these invariant states interact with each other to form a building block description of SDC.
