This image was inspired by the iconic cover art of the album "Unknown Pleasures" by the band Joy Division. The data on the original album cover was from Jocelyn Bell Burnell's discovery of pulsars.  The data we show here is a little more down-to-earth -- it comes from velocity measurements from highly turbulent flow in a pipe, as well as the "scale division" of those measurements into contributions from turbulent eddies of different sizes.  Remarkably, the eddies look the same, on average, at all scales,  Most flows in nature (e.g. the atmosphere) and technology (e.g. in a jet engine) are turbulent, and the self-similarity revealed by the analysis underlying this image is important in understanding and developing mathematical models of turbulent flow.
