The following collection of infrared images were captured during a March 2023 airborne field experiment. The images were collected using a FLIR X8500sc midwave infrared camera mounted on the underside of the Naval Research Laboratory’s Twin Otter aircraft. While flying at an altitude of ~3500 ft, images were taken with the IR camera over inland coastal waters in the lower Chesapeake Bay region of Maryland and Virginia. These images reveal the striking thermal heterogeneity of inland coastal waters. The color scale of the images was selected to highlight the thermal patterns present in the water such that white corresponds to cooler temperatures.
