A novel tape design with serrated trailing edges, termed 3D-BFS, looks to be an alternative to the layer of tape typically applied to the leading edge of wind turbine blades for protection from wind, erosion, debris, etc. Previous works show a 6-7% increase in power production relative to the traditional tape along with the presence of strong coherent structures. The current work uses a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) package (Star-CCM+) to replicate previous experimental results and to understand the mechanisms behind improved performance.
