Shock waves commonly occur in flows where fluid velocity exceeds the local sound speed, i.e. Mach number (M) goes above 1. Certain flow scenarios with M > 1 can exhibit unsteady motion of shock waves. This video demonstrates such behavior in a hypersonic flow at M = 6, where a geometrically simple object placed in a uniform flow gives rise to visually rich and scientifically interesting phenomena of pulsating/oscillating shock waves.
