When liquid drops impact a cold substrate the coupling of fluid dynamics and thermal transport leave a signature on the geometry and properties of the frozen splat. This interplay connecting short and long timescale physics can be tuned to control drop adhesion by promoting sticking or self-peeling. These insights have broad applicability in processes ranging from thermal spraying and additive manufacturing to de-icing.
