In 1967, JFM editors declared fluid mechanics as a “photogenic subject” in their review of film series on fluid mechanics.

Here, Photogenic Fluids I-IV (this and the following three posters) represent ongoing explorations of producing two- and three-dimensional objects that demonstrate beauty and complexity of fluid motion.  Most are aimed at informal science education and outreach activities, and are interactive, where a non-expert can initiate a fluid motion and appreciate the resulting pattern. Brief information about related science also accompanies each object to inform users.

These explorations are easy to adapt and expand upon.  They require only ordinary fluids, simple set ups, and inexpensive equipment.  None of the images shown is digitally altered, except for cropping.  On a personal note, the explorations have been therapeutic.
