P0022: Quantitative visualization of mud flow during the drilling process using ultrasound speckle velocimetry

The mud flow appearing in the drilling process was quantitatively visualized by using ultrasound speckle velocimetry. this phenomenon could be seen at the soil hardening site. We made Taylor-couttee flow with the surface protrusion for simulating the frilling process. The outer surface of inner cylinder has a spiral protrusion and the inner cylinder of outer cylinder has the plain surface. The velocity fields of gap flow between two concentric cylinders were measured using ultrasound speckle velocimetry. Mud and water were used for the working fluid and compared the velocity fields. The quantitative results showed the vortex flow around the protrusion and we found the difference of flow structure between the mud and water flow. We believe this information can be useful to understand and develop the new drilling process in the complex fluid flow.
